If you go on the internet, you're likely to come across a number of "best MyCareer build" lists. They're great but what you should be doing is think of the character you'd like to play as and build your character accordingly. If you're not looking to compete against the top players in The City, you'll be happy with any build you decide to choose.
Personally, we love playing tough defense (blocks aren't exactly a great idea so far this year) in addition to setting up our teammates and hitting the occasional three when defense is sagging off. That might not be suitable for you, but play your way around the editors and come up with something you love. It's much more enjoyable this way.
One of the biggest issues players face in their first few days with MyCareer is that they aren't able to see the floor well enough to earn a "B" or better Teammate Rating. Since you're an underrated player (unless you invest some money to purchase Virtual Currency), you're just going to have a few minutes.
This is a way around this that gives you more chances to accumulate numbers. Head into your Settings and select the Quarter Length option. Set it to either between 10 and 12 minutes and you'll have more time on the court than you're aware of what you'll do. This can give you an enormous VC boost, which means you can improve your player faster.
This one's a goof, but it is rather silly to wander around The City with State Farm's official uniform on. Once you log in and complete the initial missions Check your quests. The quest should takes you to Jake in State Farm. Speak to him and you'll be able to get the full dress code to wear when you're faced with a challenging pickup game.
