La description

We're mostly an entertainment studio and a technology company. Our staff of 400 includes 250 technical people. We create our own tools for everything we require. So we do a lot in research and development. Our challenge was to develop a software package which would use our code from the 360, Wii, or PS3 and convert it into a C# program.

It was one of my primary goals as I joined Jagex. We realized that we could implement our code onto consoles. Making it technically possible is one thing however, how will platform holders look at the model of free-to-play? This is a great point. That's the area where we're having problems right now, and those are the issues we are discussing with platform holders.

My aim is to create an entirely free game for each console, and to keep the current model of free-to-play. I think this is where the industry should be headed, but I don't think this is where they want to be, considering that everything on WiiWare, PSN and XBLA has a price tag on it in some way.

I think that free-to-play games will be charged at a minimal fee. That means that you will have to pay to download it and, if you want you could purchase the premium version. While this is the current thinking, it's still not a definitive answer. My preference is to lobby the companies to inform them that they need to get up-to-date with the current tastes of the public.

What luck do you have when pitching the free-to-play model to every platform holder. I'm not able to give any specifics. We're still talking about things, so I won't discuss specific companies.

Former Jagex CEO Geoff Iddison said that he was looking to combine the premium subscription model and micropayments. What are your thoughts on this idea? I'm not sure you could take an existing game similar to Runescape and retrofit microtransactions to it. The game's just too big, and I don't think it will add value to our players. It is possible to make the system more profitable, but it would cost players excessively.

Why do you think that free-to-play games are so closely connected to MMOs? I believe many people think the term MMO implies that you'll spend significant amounts of time using a product. So I think the free to-play model complements this better since it lets players ask the question, "Do I want to spend a lot of time on this?"
